Brief Description:
With funding from its
“Special Research Fund,” Ghent University grants PhD
“sandwich” scholarships to promising PhD candidates from developing
countries who wish to undertake half of their PhD research at Ghent University
(‘North’) and half at a university in a developing nation (‘South’) (BOF).

Duration:
Ghent University will only
sponsor the part of the research that will take place in Ghent (24 months); the
candidate must acquire full-time funding for the remaining 24 months of
research in the South.

Students must begin and
conclude their studies in Ghent with a 3 to 12-month research stay.
·
Between October 1, 2022,
and February 28, 2023, the first research stay in Ghent must begin.
·
Between the first and last
research stays in Ghent, at least 24 months of locally sponsored research must
be scheduled in the South.

Benefits of Scholarship:
·
A monthly tuition fee of
EURO 310 will be paid.
·
The grant will be of EURO
8000, which will cover operating costs as well as travel expenses for the Ghent
university promoter, local promoters, and students.
Eligibility:
·
Candidates must be from a developing
country and hold the nationality of that country (mentioned above)
·
The candidate, a
supervisor (promoter) at Ghent University, and a supervisor at the partner
university must all submit proposals together
·
Although there are no
constraints on the research field, priority will be given to themes that are
relevant to development.
·
Only degree students
(those planning to pursue a combined PhD at Ghent University) are eligible to
apply.
·
This scholarship is
unavailable to exchange students.
·
Ghent University wishes to
encourage more female researchers to apply for this scholarship. As a
result, a supervisor from Ghent University can support two candidates per
call if they are of different genders.
Partnership Conditions:
·
At the partner university
or research center in the South, a local PhD supervisor is required.
·
A written statement from
the partner university stating that the candidate will receive a fulltime local
PhD scholarship or salary for a period of 24 months while working on the PhD at
the partner university in the South AND that the candidate will be sufficiently
exempted from teaching or other responsibilities to be able to fully
concentrate on the PhD research in the South is required.
·
Applicants can devote up
to 10% of their time (on a full-time basis) to other projects (teaching and
other tasks)
